Red Hook is a district in the Greater New York area that is up and coming in terms of tech companies, industrial spaces and population growth. It’s close to the water front but because of its lack of transportation systems it is hard for people to access this district. Our transportation center aims to integrate with the existing ferry system while also introducing a new cable car transportation center and some public water front piers to better serve the neighborhood.
Kinesis serves as a transfer point for the ferries, BQX bus, and cable car system. The building we are proposing uses height to create potential energy which the cable cars can convert into kinetic energy as they run through the loop, borrowing the concept of a roller coaster system. They use regenerative breaking to store electricity. At the same time the system provides stored energy to the building which can be used for personal devices such as electric bikes, scooters, and skateboards. This creates a sustainable and efficient transportation hub in a theme park like setting. Complete with parks and a vertical street fair, this transportation hub is not only a connection, but a destination.
